Shasta Lake is located in Northern California in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest surrounded with lush, green mountains. The lake is the largest reservoir in California with a surface area of 29,500 acres and a shoreline longer than the San Francisco Bay. Both Lassen Peak and Mount Shasta are visible from the city of Shasta Lake. Shasta Lake or Lake Shasta is home to a wide variety of wildlife species and offers several recreational opportunities, including house boating, camping, fishing and hiking, making it the most popular house boating and recreation centers in the western United States. The water is warm, clear and calm, perfect for swimming, skiing and wakeboarding. Both Lake Shasta and Shasta Dam are popular tourist destinations, attracting tourists from all over.The ideal camping time in most Forest areas is May to October. Reservations are available for both single site (up to 180 days in advance of arrival) and group booking. During holiday weekends, our campgrounds fill very quickly. Majority of Forest campgrounds are operated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Just minutes north of Redding California, Lake Shasta Caverns can be reached by guided tours which include a bus ride, boat ride and one hour guided tour of the caverns. Also if you plan to visit Shasta Dam, you can check out the vista point overlooking Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake and Mount Shasta.
Lake Shasta Caverns
Lake Shasta Caverns is located along Lake Shasta in Northern California north of Redding. Tours are available to visit the Shasta Caverns, tour station is located in the region called O'Brien. The tour is a three in one adventure including a 15 minutes cruise across the Shasta lake surrounded by majestic mountains, then a 10 minutes scenic bus ride up to the Caverns and an hour guided tour around the Caverns. Inside, visitors get an up-close view of rock formations that took 200 million years in the making. From tiny cave coral, cave drapery, flow stone, to magnificent stalagmites, stalactites, and columns, there is endless beauty here.
Opened to the public in 1964, the Caverns are on privately owned land but the land used for access roads, parking, reception centers, and boat docks is under a U.S. Government lease through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
